Title:
PRR 4289, I-1S, 1940
Description:
Here is a photo by H.W. Pontin via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1940. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4289, an I-1S built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during July of 1923 and retired in January of 1956 after 33 years of faithful service. In this context, it's pulling a train of empty hopper cars around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania. Wave to the Fireman! John S. Fisher Collection; #8 of 14.
